Europe’s Entry/Exit System (EES) begins rolling out on October 12, 2025, requiring non-EU citizens, including U.S. passport holders, to provide fingerprints and facial images at the border. This digital system will replace traditional passport stamps, track entry and exit dates and be gradually implemented over six months, with full adoption expected by April 2026. The goal of the EES is to enhance border security, combat overstays and detect identity fraud.
How Will The Fingerprinting Work In Practice?
If a traveler does not return to Europe within the next three years, they likely will be treated as a first-time visitor and may need to provide biometrics again. For regular travelers who aren’t away from Europe for this long, however, the initial process could be one time only.
