Europe Entry: Here’s What’s Changing

Europe Entry: Here’s What’s Changing

The European Union is beginning to introduce its new Entry/Exit System (EES). This will replace the old passport stamping process with a quick digital check. The rollout is happening gradually over six months at airports, seaports and land borders, with full implementation expected by April 2026.

Once in place, EES will apply to 29 European countries — including popular destinations like France, Germany, Greece and Switzerland. Here’s what to expect on your first entry after EES begins:

  • Scanning your fingerprints
  • Taking a photo
  • Recording passport details (name, date of birth, document number)

After your first visit, your future entries will be much smoother and faster. And as always, I’m here to guide you and answer any questions that may come up before your next trip.

COMING NEXT: ETIAS TRAVEL AUTHORIZATION

The EU is also preparing to launch the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS), a travel authorization similar to the U.S. ESTA. It isn’t required yet, but once active (expected late 2026/early 2027), it will be mandatory to apply online before your trip. I will keep you updated as this change approaches in the new year.
